On this page
Gemini gives US customers Form 1099-DA in its Tax Center (Account > Statements and Taxes > Taxes), available from February 15 each year. For your own records or tax software, download your Exchange Transaction History from the Transaction History page; Gemini exports it as an .xlsx spreadsheet. If you moved coins onto Gemini from elsewhere, enter their cost basis in the Tax Center, or the gain on those sales cannot be calculated.
What Gemini gives you
| Document | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1099-DA | Official form listing your sales, sent to you and the IRS | Tax Center: Account > Statements and Taxes > Taxes |
| Exchange Transaction History | Your full trade, deposit and withdrawal history (.xlsx) | Transaction History page |
| Gain/loss statement | Gemini's gain/loss calculation, for account holders not eligible for a 1099-DA (mainly C corporations) | Tax Center |
| Form 1099-MISC | Rewards and staking income above the reporting threshold | Tax Center |
Step by step: download your transaction history
From Gemini's help article "How can I view my transaction history?":
- Sign in on the web and open the Transaction History page.
- Click the download button next to Exchange Transaction History.
- Select your date range: for taxes, from your first deposit to the end of the tax year.
- Click Download .xlsx.
In the mobile app, the transaction history is under the Portfolio tab: scroll down and tap Transaction History.
The file is an Excel spreadsheet, not a CSV. Most tax tools that support Gemini accept the .xlsx directly; if yours wants CSV, open the file and save a copy as CSV, keeping the original. If you earned staking rewards, check the Tax Center and transaction history page for a separate staking history: staking income is reported differently from trades.
Step by step: download your 1099-DA
- Sign in and go to Account > Statements and Taxes > Taxes (the Tax Center).
- Download Form 1099-DA for the year. Gemini says forms are available for eligible accounts on February 15 each year.
Reading your Gemini 1099-DA
Gemini's help center explains its 1099-DA in plain terms:
- 2025 forms report proceeds only. The copy filed with the IRS shows no gain or loss for 2025 sales.
- From 2026, basis is reported for assets purchased on the exchange on or after January 1, 2026 and held there until sale. That matches the IRS rule for "covered" assets.
- Your copy shows more than the IRS copy. Gemini says the customer copy includes gain/loss information that is not reported to the IRS, using the basis of assets bought and held on Gemini, assets acquired on Gemini without a purchase (such as card rewards), and transferred assets for which you entered basis.
- Stablecoins have a threshold. Gemini applies a $10,000 annual de minimis threshold for qualified stablecoin sales; sales of all other assets are reported one by one, even under $1.
- GUSD shows no gain or loss, because it trades 1:1 with the dollar.
Add cost basis for coins you transferred in
Gemini cannot know what you paid on another platform. For every coin you deposited and later sold, the Tax Center lets you enter the acquisition cost and date. Gemini's help page also explains how to tell a transfer from your own account apart from a gift or a payment, because each is treated differently.
If you have many transferred lots, tax software that imports your history from the original exchange or wallet can fill in this basis for you; you then report the correct figures on Form 8949 regardless of what Gemini's form shows.
Choosing a cost basis method
Gemini's Tax Center offers three methods for which units are treated as sold:
| Method | Sells first | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| FIFO (default) | Oldest units | Mix of long- and short-term results |
| HIFO | Most expensive units | Smaller gains, but may push sales into short-term |
| LIFO | Newest units | Mostly short-term results |
If you do not choose, Gemini uses FIFO. Gemini says it cannot advise which method to use or the consequences of changing it; discuss that with a tax professional, especially if you used a different method in earlier years. IRS rules for identifying units are covered in the US crypto tax guide.
What Gemini does not do for you
Gemini's help center is direct about the limits:
- Its gains and losses only consider assets held in your Gemini account. The cost basis method is not applied across your other exchanges or wallets.
- It does not calculate your overall crypto tax across other exchanges, DeFi or self-custody wallets.
- It does not provide Form 8949. You or your software prepare it from the 1099-DA and your records.
Turn the export into a tax report
If you only ever bought on Gemini, held there and sold there, the Tax Center may give you nearly everything. Once coins move between Gemini and other platforms like Coinbase or Kraken, you need one place that tracks each coin from purchase to sale.
FAQ
When is the Gemini 1099-DA available?
Gemini says Form 1099-DA is available for eligible accounts on February 15 each year, in the Tax Center under Account > Statements and Taxes > Taxes.
Why is the Gemini export an .xlsx file?
That is the format Gemini provides for the Exchange Transaction History download. Keep the original file; if your tax tool needs CSV, save a copy in CSV format.
Does Gemini report my staking rewards on the 1099-DA?
No. IRS instructions tell brokers not to report rewards and staking payments on Form 1099-DA. Gemini issues Form 1099-MISC for reportable rewards and staking income; you report the income either way.
