Coinbase gives US customers two things at tax time: Form 1099-DA, under Coinbase Taxes > Documents, and a transaction statement you can download as CSV from the Statements page. For 2026 sales, the 1099-DA includes cost basis only for coins you bought on Coinbase after 2025 and kept there. Anything you transferred in needs your own records.
What you get from Coinbase
| Document | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1099-DA | Official IRS form listing your sales. Sent to you and to the IRS | Coinbase Taxes > Documents |
| Gain/loss report | Coinbase's calculation of gains on Coinbase activity (US customers) | Coinbase Taxes |
| Transaction statement | Raw history (buys, sells, sends, receives, rewards) as CSV, PDF or HTML | Statements page |
The CSV statement is what tax software or an accountant needs. The 1099-DA is what the IRS will compare your return against.
Step by step: download your Coinbase 1099-DA
Coinbase issues Form 1099-DA to eligible US customers starting with the 2025 tax year. The steps from Coinbase's help center:
- Sign in to Coinbase on the web.
- Open Coinbase Taxes.
- Select Documents.
- Download the form for the year you are filing.
Brokers send 1099-DA forms early in the year. For 2026 activity, expect it in early 2027.
Step by step: export a CSV transaction statement
- Sign in and open the Statements page. On the web it sits under your profile and account settings; Coinbase's help page also links to it directly.
- To get everything for one period, generate a custom statement: choose the asset (all assets), the transaction type (all types) and the date range.
- Choose CSV as the format and select Generate.
- Download the file when it is ready.
Monthly statements are also available in HTML, PDF and CSV, but a custom statement covering your whole account history is easier for tax software.
Reading your 2026 Form 1099-DA
The form changes with the 2026 tax year, so expect it to look different from the 2025 one:
- 2025 forms showed proceeds only. No cost basis was reported.
- 2026 forms add cost basis for covered assets. Under the IRS instructions, a covered asset is crypto acquired after 2025 in your Coinbase account and held there until you sold it.
- Noncovered assets show proceeds without basis. That includes coins bought before 2026 and coins you sent to Coinbase from another wallet or exchange. Coinbase's help page is clear that for noncovered assets, you are responsible for tracking and reporting the basis yourself.
- Only the network fee is reported on a send. When you send crypto to another wallet, Coinbase says only the crypto sold or used to pay the network fee goes on the 1099-DA. The rest of the send is a transfer, not a sale.
- Staking rewards are not on the 1099-DA. IRS instructions tell brokers not to report rewards and staking payments on this form. They are still income for you.
Coinbase uses Eastern Time
Coinbase reports tax-year activity in US Eastern Time. A trade placed at 11pm on December 31 Pacific Time is already January 1 in New York, so it lands on the next year's form. If you trade near midnight on New Year's Eve, check which year Coinbase put it in and make your return match the form.
What Coinbase's tax reporting leaves out
Coinbase's help pages list what its tax reports do not cover:
- Self-custody wallet activity. Transactions in Coinbase's self-custody wallet app are not part of Coinbase's tax reporting. Export them separately; for an Ethereum-based wallet, our MetaMask guide shows how block explorer exports work.
- Coinbase Pro history. Old Coinbase Pro transactions are not included in the current reports. If you used Pro, keep the statements you downloaded at the time.
- Other exchanges and DeFi. Coinbase only knows what happened on Coinbase.
Fixing missing cost basis on Coinbase
If you transferred coins in from another platform, Coinbase cannot know what you paid. Coinbase's help center has a page on editing transaction details in Coinbase Taxes, which you can use to add the original cost and date so its gain/loss report is more accurate. That updates Coinbase's own report. Your Form 1099-DA is a separate document; when its basis is missing or wrong, report the correct figures on Form 8949.
A tax software import solves the same problem from the other side: it reads your history from the original exchange or wallet as well, sees the transfer, and carries the original basis across automatically.
Check the file before you upload it
- The statement covers all years since your first purchase, not only 2026.
- Every send to an address you own has a matching receive in another wallet or exchange export.
- Rewards and staking rows are present; they count as income when received.
- Your software's closing balance for each coin matches what Coinbase shows today.
- You kept the original CSV unedited; spreadsheet apps can change date formats when you save.
Turn the export into a tax report
If all your activity is on Coinbase and you bought everything there after 2025, the 1099-DA and Coinbase's gain/loss report may be most of what you need. Add transfers from other wallets, a second exchange or earlier purchases, and you need one place that sees everything.
FAQ
When does Coinbase send the 1099-DA?
Brokers deliver 1099-DA forms early in the year after the tax year. For 2026 sales, look in Coinbase Taxes > Documents in early 2027.
I did not get a 1099-DA from Coinbase. Do I still report?
Yes. You must report every taxable sale or swap, even without a form. The IRS digital asset FAQ says so directly (Q108).
Is converting crypto on Coinbase taxable?
Yes. Converting one coin to another, including to a stablecoin, is a sale of the coin you gave up. It is a capital gain or loss.
