About CryptoTaxWiki
CryptoTaxWiki publishes practical guides for one job: getting your crypto records into a state where you, your tax software or your accountant can file a correct return.
Most crypto tax content is written by companies that sell tax software. Their guides are often good, but they all end in the same place. We try to answer the question first, including when the answer is "you don't need software for this".
Who writes these guides
The guides are written and maintained by Jackson, the site's founder and editor. Jackson is not a CPA, enrolled agent or tax attorney, and nothing here replaces one. What the guides offer is careful reading of official sources and step-by-step instructions you can check yourself.
How we research and check
- Exchange steps come from each exchange's own help center. Every guide links the help articles it uses and shows the date we last checked them.
- Tax rules, rates and forms come from the tax authority: the IRS for the US, HMRC for the UK, the ATO for Australia, the CRA for Canada, and so on. We link the primary source rather than another blog.
- Numbers are never invented. If we could not confirm a fee, limit or threshold in an official source, we leave it out or say so.
- Calculators use published tables, and the worked examples on each tool page are generated by the same code as the tool.
- Updates: guides are reviewed before each filing season and whenever a rule or an exchange menu changes. The "Updated" date at the top of each page is the last time the content changed.
We use AI tools to help with research and drafting. Every guide is then checked line by line against the sources it cites before it is published.
How we make money
Some links on this site are referral links (currently CoinLedger). If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what we recommend: our guides say when a free option or a plain spreadsheet is enough. Full details are on the affiliate disclosure page. We do not accept paid reviews and we do not run coupon pages.
Corrections
Tax rules and exchange menus change. If a step does not match what you see, or you think we got a rule wrong, email [email protected] with the page link and what you found. We check every report and update the page, including the "Updated" date.
Not tax advice
Everything here is general information. Your situation, country and the latest rules matter. Before you file, check with a qualified tax professional or your tax authority.
